A change of use is desired in which it is desired to increase the overload capacity of a mezzanine originally designed for offices and built within the facilities of an industrial warehouse.
The structural configuration of the shed corresponds to frames separated every 5.85 m in the longitudinal direction supporting a light gabled roof. The mesanina was later built with tubular section profiles on which a system of beams supporting a ten centimeter thick mixed slab rests. It was possible to verify that the composite composite slab does not contain shear connectors which decreases its resistance.
The existing structure was investigated through an inspection that made it possible to determine the profiles used, quality of the connections and the creation of structural plans through an on-site survey.
Deflections were observed in some of the beams that were above the service limits required in the standards.
The structure was evaluated and the maximum allowable overload was determined, which exceeds that required for the new use.
Several alternatives were developed considering new loads and seismic actions from which the client selected the most convenient one according to functionality and cost.
The structure was evaluated with the proposed reinforcement, which ensures good performance against the new overloads assigned by the change of use and safety against possible seismic movements.
